A Legacy Built One Home at a Time

A Family Tradition of Building Homes Since 1925

Our story

Long before Rylea Homes was established in Maryland, the Ryan family was building homes with a simple philosophy: create quality homes, provide lasting value, and treat every family like a neighbor.

That tradition began in 1925, when Edward J. Ryan set out to build the home he had promised his wife on their wedding day. Working nights and weekends, Ed built their home on Rockwood Drive in Castle Shannon, Pennsylvania. Before the house was even finished, a man offered to buy it.

With his wife’s blessing, Ed sold the home and began building another. Word quickly spread that Ed Ryan was building quality homes for families in his community. What started with one home soon became E.J. Ryan Homes, establishing a family legacy that would span generations.

Building on a Family Tradition

Ed's three sons joined the family business in 1947, carrying forward the standards and values their father had established.

Together, they expanded the company and built thousands of homes in communities across the country. Through every stage of growth, the family's philosophy remained the same: build quality homes, provide exceptional value, and take pride in the place families call home.

That commitment became the foundation for the next generation of Ryan homebuilders.

The Beginning of Rylea Homes

In 1982, James P. Ryan, Jr. continued that family tradition by establishing Rylea Homes in Maryland.

With the same commitment to quality and craftsmanship that had guided his family for generations, James built Rylea Homes into a trusted homebuilder throughout Maryland and Virginia.

Over the years, Rylea Homes has built more than 1,200 homes, at one point building as many as 125 homes a year.

But as the company evolved, so did its approach.

From Building More to Building Better

Today, Rylea Homes focuses on what matters most: building exceptional homes for the families who live in them.

Rather than focusing on volume, we take a more personal approach to custom homebuilding. Our homes are generally 2,500 square feet and beyond, with thoughtful designs, quality materials, and carefully considered details throughout.

Building fewer homes allows us to devote more time and attention to each homeowner. From the initial conversation to the final walk-through, we take the time to understand your vision, answer your questions, and make the building process feel personal.

It's a return to the way the Ryan family began—with a genuine investment in every home and every family we serve.

The Ryan Value

A Standard That Has Lasted for Generations

For more than 100 years, the Ryan name has represented quality, craftsmanship, honesty, and value.

At Rylea Homes, we call this the Ryan Value.

It means taking pride in the details. It means standing behind our work. It means communicating openly and treating our homeowners with respect. And it means creating homes that aren't just beautiful today, but built to provide lasting value for generations to come.

The homes may have changed over the years, but the values behind them have not.

Proudly Building the American Home

One Family at a Time.

For generations, the Ryan family has had the privilege of helping families create a place of their own. We look forward to carrying that tradition forward—and perhaps building the next chapter of your family's story.
